Hyundai Bets on Tamil Nadu as India’s EV Powerhouse, Announces New Electric Vehicle and Skills Initiative

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) has reaffirmed its commitment to Tamil Nadu, declaring the state its flagship electric vehicle (EV) hub for India. In partnership with the Government of Tamil Nadu, the automaker has also launched a specialized skill development initiative aimed at enhancing the global employability of the state's youth. The company plans to introduce two new models from its Chennai facility, including its first mass-market dedicated EV, while expanding localization efforts and strengthening Tamil Nadu’s position as a key center for electric mobility and automotive manufacturing.

Hyundai Motor India is significantly expanding its ambitions in Tamil Nadu, positioning the state at the heart of its electric mobility strategy and workforce development plans.

The automaker announced that Tamil Nadu will serve as its flagship EV hub in India, underscoring the importance of the state in Hyundai's future growth trajectory. The move reflects the company's confidence in Tamil Nadu's established manufacturing ecosystem, skilled workforce, and growing prominence in India's transition toward sustainable transportation.

Alongside its electrification plans, Hyundai and the Government of Tamil Nadu unveiled an exclusive skill development partnership designed to prepare young professionals for emerging opportunities in advanced manufacturing and mobility technologies. The initiative is slated to commence operations in December 2027 and aims to improve the global employability of the state's youth through industry-focused training programs.

Speaking on the announcement, Hyundai Motor India Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Tarun Garg emphasized the dual focus on technological advancement and human capital development. He noted that the company's investments would not only accelerate EV adoption but also help cultivate a workforce equipped for the rapidly evolving automotive landscape.

A major highlight of Hyundai's roadmap is the launch of two new vehicles from its Chennai manufacturing facility, including the company's first dedicated mass-market electric vehicle in India, expected later this year. The introduction of the new EV is intended to broaden consumer access to electric mobility and support the development of a stronger domestic EV ecosystem.

The company is simultaneously accelerating the localization of critical EV technologies. Hyundai has already established Tamil Nadu's first battery sub-assembly plant for electric vehicle powertrains and continues to increase local sourcing of power electronics and other essential components. These efforts are expected to strengthen supply chains, reduce costs, and support the growth of India's domestic EV manufacturing capabilities.

Tamil Nadu has long been a cornerstone of Hyundai's global production network. Vehicles manufactured in the state have been exported to more than 150 countries, with cumulative exports exceeding 3.9 million units. This export performance highlights the state's role as a globally competitive manufacturing base and reinforces Hyundai's confidence in expanding its operations there.

As India accelerates its push toward cleaner mobility and advanced manufacturing, Hyundai's latest commitments signal a deeper investment in both technological innovation and workforce development. The initiatives are expected to further elevate Tamil Nadu's standing as one of the country's most important hubs for electric vehicles and automotive excellence.
